Gary Smallwood, a well-respected and sought after musician, native to the DC/ Northern Va. area has been successfully entertaining and delighting audiences here as well as along the East Coast, parts of the Midwest & South since high school. Gary has released several CD's and has contributed his talents to other artist's recorded work as a studio musician.
Gary started his musical career as a drummer in the 6th grade...at age 13 after hearing some local bands and musicians he became interested in the bass. He taught himself to play by listening to some of his favorite records which included Beatles, Sly & the Family Stone, Black Sabbath, etc....at age 15 he saw a late night movie entitled 'A Film About Jimi Hendrix' and was awestruck...from then on it was guitar, guitar, guitar...and what was to follow was an exploration and discovery of other guitar greats who would become huge influences on his guitar playing such as Eric Clapton, Robin Trower, Frank Marino & Edward Van Halen to name just a few...Gary was asked to join a popular local band just over a year later...the guys in the band were older and did a bit of touring to nearby cities. They would occasionally get home just in time to drop Gary off at his school bus stop!
Gary's musical stylings can be described as Classic Rock, Blues Rock or just flat out Guitar Rock...he also has an appreciation for all types of music such as R&B, Soul, Funk, Jazz, Country and Show tunes...sometimes he will incorporate these into his playing.
Gary has enjoyed his musical career over the years and has been lucky enough to perform with or 'open' for some great musicians. He has performed with "just about everyone in the DC area and then some!" He has had some "very memorable" gigs over the years and some "not so memorable" ones, just ask him about some of those when you see him at a gig near you!
